Dish Network removed Fox News and Fox Business channels in
December as part of contract negotiations, and in response Fox has
released a new ad encouraging subscribers to drop Dish. This isn't the
first time the satellite TV provider has clashed with a network. Dish just
settled its differences with CBS, Cartoon Network, CNN, Boomerang and Turner
Classic Movies, according to The Associated Press. And in 2012, Dish
dropped AMC Networks for three months due to a legal dispute.
Although Dish has 14 million subscribers, it took a bit of a
hit with its Fox News drop. On Dec. 28 it saw only 96,000 viewers in the 25-54
age demographic, and on Jan. 7 brought in 99,000 viewers. These two days were
the first and second times the network has drawn less than 100,000 viewers in
the younger demo during the day in 13 years, according to The Wrap.
And it certainly doesn't sound like either party will be
backing down soon. According to Warren Schlichting, senior vice president of
programming at Dish said Fox blacked out two of its news channels, using them
as leverage to triple rates on sports and entertainment channels that are not
in the contract.
